AgarwoodandtheworldIncensehasalwaysbeenanimportantmediuminthepromotionofculturaldevelopment.Arabmerchantsweresearchingforexpensiveagarwoodwhentheycameacrosspepperandcinnamon,whichinspiredthemtothediscoveryofawholeseriesofcheaperherbs.Drivenbythedemandforprestigiousincense,merchantsmadealotofeffortindevelopinginter-territorialtrade,whichledtothedevelopmentofinter-territorialroads.Explorersstartedtodiscovernewcontinentsandnewlandsthrough“TheIncenseTrail”,and“TheSpiceRoute”werejustasimportantas“TheSilkRoad”inpromotingtrade,communication,technologicalandculturalexchangesintheEastandtheWest.Incensewasusedtoproduceperfumes,whilespiceswereusedincooking.Chinaexchangedincenseandspiceswithsilk.Incense,spicesandsilkhadundoubtedlyplayedasignificantroleinpromotingglobalculturaldevelopment.

AgarwoodandtheGardenofEdenInBalaam'sdescriptionsoftheIsraelitesinNumbers(documentsofthefirstcensusamongtheIsraelites),thefourthbookintheHebrewBibleandtheFiveBooksofMosses,hementionedthattheywere“asthetreesoflignaloeswhichtheLORDhathplanted”,suggestingthattheoriginsofagarwoodtreescanbetracedbacktotheGardenofEden.(Numbers24:6)

AgarwoodinhistoryAccordingtoancientEgyptianhistory,agarwoodwasapreciousingredientusedinthemakingofmummies.JesususedaloesoilinperformingmiraclesandJesus'resurrectionalsoinvolvedtheuseofaloesoil.(John19:39:“AndtherecamealsoNicodemus,whichatfirstcametoJesusbynight,andbroughtamixtureofmyrrhandaloes,aboutanhundredpoundweight.”)Jesus'bodywascoveredinagenerousamountofaloesoil.TheresurrectionofJesushadaddedtothemysteryofmedicinalapplicationsembodiedbyagarwood.

1)Buddhism:ItisstatedinChapternineteenofTheLotusSutra,“TheMeritsofMasterVirtue”thatthefragranceofagarwoodcanpenetratethethreedomains,whichmakesitanimportantoffering.Piecesofagarwoodoragarwoodpowderisusedinmeditation,scripturechantingandotherholyceremonies.Agarwoodisalsousedinmakingmalastobehungaroundnecksandwrists.ItiscommonforaBuddhisttoholdamalainhis/herhandwhenrecitingthescripture.Beingwarmedbybodytemperature,theagarwoodmalawouldthenreleaseafragrancethatinducesclarityandthepeaceofmind.ItisalsorecordedintheBuddhistscripturethat“onecancastawaybadluckbyburningtheincensethatsinksinwater”.

2)Taoism:Itadvocatesthenaturallawof“wuweierzhi”(meaningRulebyNotRuling)byLaoziandZhuangzi.Agarwoodisburnedformeditationaswellaswhenexorcismisbeingpractised.The“smoky”sceneisarepresentationofhowthe“qi”–energy–ofheavenandearthisbeingunified.TopractisetheTaoistexerciseforhealth,itisverycommonusingagarwoodtohelpawakeningandenlightenment.WhenZhangSan-fengfinishedhisworkonearthandbelievedtohaveascendedtoheaven,hewasfounddisappearingfromthecaveleavingbehindapairofstrawshoesandthreepiecesofagarwood.

3)CatholicismandChristianity:AfterJesuswascrucified,hisbodywascoveredwithmyrrhandagarwood.ItwasalsoanancientChristiantraditionforthebrideandgroomtoplantanagarwoodtreefortheirmarriage.AgarwoodisnotonlyprestigiousinCatholicismandProtestantism,butitisalsousedintheanointmentceremoniesoftheRomanCatholicChurch,theEasternOrthodoxChurchandsomeoftheProtestantchurches,nottomentionitsroleinblessing,prayer,funerals,etc.Theholyoilismadeofoliveoil,agarwood,myrrhandmusk.Ministerswouldthenusetheholyoiltodrawcrossesonpatients'foreheadsandpalms,soastoblessthemwithspiritualsupportandpeace,aswellastohelpthemtoaskforGod'sforgivenessoftheirsins.Catholicsbelievethatsuchsacramentswouldbringmiraclehealingtofaithfulpatients.Infact,theword“Christ”meanstheSaviourandLord;butasitoriginatedfromtheGreekword“Khrists”,whichbearsthemeaningof“theanointedone”.

AgarwoodandChinesecultureForthousandsofyears,thisexceptionalincenseofagarwoodhasinspiredtheChineseaboutpeaceandharmony.AccordingtotheoraclebonescriptexcavatedfromYanXu(datedtoaround1400BC),“ShengMin”fromtheClassicofPoetry,orBookofOdes,describestheancestorsofthepeopleoftheZhouDynastyusingsweetwormwood,andthe“CanonofShun”fromtheClassicofHistoryrecordsEmperorShunholdingagrandceremonyknownas“fengshan”atMountTai,whereheburnedfirewoodasoffering.TheoraclebonescriptalsoshowshowtheancientChineseofthetimealreadymadepineresintorches.

“Alegacyoffragrantscholars”and“thecontinuationofthefragranceofthefamily”ItwastheultimategoalforancientChinesescholarstostudydiligently,wentthroughroundsofexaminationstogetabettercareerinthegovernment.Incensewaswidelyusedbyroyaltiesandcommoners,inspecialoccasionssuchasreceivinganImperialDecree.Scholarswouldcarryagarwoodasluckycharms.Thecourtbeadsontherobesofgovernmentofficialsweremadeofhighqualityagarwood.Agarwoodwasalsousedasinsectdeterrentforpaintingsandcalligraphicartcollection.Peoplewoulddescribeanintellectualfamilyas“alegacyoffragrantscholars”andthebirthofchildrenas“thecontinuationofthefragranceofthefamily”.

IncensewasbeingglorifiedinbrilliantpoemsbyfamousChinesepoetssuchasLiHouzhu,LiShangyin,WangWeiandBaiJuyioftheTangDynasty,SuShi,LiQingzhaoandZhuXioftheSongDynasty,aswellasCaoXueqinfromtheQingDynasty.“BurningIncensewithHuangLuzhi”bySuShiand“BurningIncense”byChenQu-feiwereparticularlywell-written.

TheproductionofagarwoodAgarwoodtreesgrowintropicalrainforests,rangingfromGuangdong,Guangxi,Yunnan,Hainan,FukieninMainlandChina,LanYuinTaiwan,SumantraofIndonesia,Borneothatisco-governedbyIndonesia,BruneiandMalaysia,Vietnam,thePhilippines,Lao,Cambodia,SarawakofMalaysia,AmericaandPapuaNewGuinea.The“agarwoodincense”qualitydiffersaccordingtotheassortment,placeoforigin,climate,waterandsoil.

Agarwoodtreesandagarwoodincensearenotthesame.Agarwoodastimberofthetreedoesnotbearanyscent.Infact,anagarwoodtreedoesnotproduceagarwoodincenseuntilitisinjured–bylightning,wind,insects,etc.Whenitishurt,theagarwoodtreewouldreleaseresintohealitswound.Yearslater,ifthisresinwrappedbranchwouldhaveachancetorotorbreakorfallwiththewholetreeandbecoveredwithwaterandsoil,thepartsthatarenotcoveredwithresinwoulddecayandvanisheventually,buttheresin-wrappedbranch,beingaffectedbydifferentenvironmentalfactors,wouldevolveintodifferentkindsof“agarwoodincense”,commonlyknownas“aloe”or“agarwood”.

Ittakesalongtimeforagarwoodtobeformed–rangingfromanumberofdecadestohundredsofyears,dependingonthequantityoftheresin.Evenifweplantalotofagarwoodtreesnow,itwouldtakemanyyearstoharvest.Thepriceofagarwoodiswayabovethatofgold.Productionofpremiumagarwoodisshrinking.Therankingof“agarwoodincense”dependsonthequalityandquantityofresinthatitcarries.ThebestagarwoodisKinam,whileJapanesecallit“Kyara”.

Ourancestorsusedtocollectagarwoodfromrottentrees,whilepeoplenowadayssometimeswoundthetreeswithspadesandaxesordrillholesonbranchesandthencoveredthemwithsoiltoinducethereleaseofresin.Manytreeshavediedanditiscreatingaserioussurvivalproblemforthespeciesaswellastheenvironment.IllegalhuntingwouldonlycausethetreestodiminishandthusdecreasesthesupplyofsuchinvaluablegiftsfromMotherEarth.Towardstheendofthelastcentury,agarwoodwaslistedasapotentiallythreatenedspeciesofplantbytheConventiononInternationalTradeinEndangeredSpeciesofWildFaunaandFlora.ManycountriesincludingIndia,Vietnam,JapanandThailandhavestartedtobreedagarwood.Therearealsoresearchesonspeedinguptheproductionofagarwood,say,byplantingfungusinthetrees.Althoughtheseresearchesareatthemomentstillquitepremature,andnaturalagarwoodisalwayspreferredtomanmadeones,itisstilldelightfultolearnthatouryoungergenerationswouldhavethechancetoappreciateagarwoodinthefuture.

Agarwoodandtoday'stechnologyIn2004,twoAmericanscientistsRichardAxelandLindaB.BuckwereawardedtheNobelPrizeofPhysiologyorMedicine“fortheirdiscoveriesofodorantreceptorsandtheorganizationoftheolfactorysystem”,whichunveiledalotofunknownsecretsofoursmellingsystem.

Themedicinalvalueofagarwoodisalsohighlyacknowledged.AgarwoodisusedasmedicineintheoldtraditionsinIslam,India,TibetandSouthEastAsia.InChinesemedicine,agarwood,aswellasrhinohorns,calculusbovisandcaterpillarfungus(Ophiocordycepssinensis)areallverypreciousmedicinesusedinremovingnegativity,bringingpeacetothebody,buildingenergy,treatingcardiopathy,stomachaches,evencancers.The“AgarwoodPillsforImmortality”fromTheFineFormulaeofWonderfulEfficacybyFangXianoftheMingDynastywasafamousTaoistrecipeinstrengtheningone'slongevity.InJapan,thedomesticChinesemedicineforcardiopathycontainsagarwood.TherewasastorythatthecigarettesthatthelateDengXiao-pingsmoked–thePandabrand–containedagarwoodtoo.ThemedicinesusedinfirstaidinVietnamalsocontainagarwood.Itisbelievedthatagarwoodcanreviveunconsciouspatients.

Scenttherapyhasbeenwidelyusedintreatingdiseasesandinthemaintenanceofhealth.Alotofincensescanservethepurposeofaneffectivepainkiller,tranquilizerorstimulant.Theyarealsoappliedintheformulaeofsomemedicinessuchassoothingointmentsandbalms.Speakingofscenttherapy,aromatherapyandfloweressencetherapymustbetakenintoaccount.Someillnessescanbehealeduponthesmellingofthescentsofcertainflowers,asthescentsgivenoffbyflowers,stemsandleavesmayregulateourmentalandphysicalconditions,stimulateourendocrineglandsandboostourimmunesystem,therebyrestoringorenhancingourhealth.SuchhospitalshavebeenopenedintheUnitedKingdom,theUnitedStatesandJapanfortreatingcardiovasculardisease,highbloodpressure,tracheitis,asthmaandpsychasthenia.Somecasinosandbusinessesusescentstoattractcustomers.
